Guillaume Dufay

Donizetti

Gaetano Donizetti (November 29, 1797 – April 8, 1848) was an Italian composer, best known for his almost 70 operas. Along with Gioachino Rossini and Vincenzo Bellini, he was a leading composer of the bel canto opera style.

Location: Known for working in Naples, Rome, Milan, Vienna, and Paris

Patrons: Wealthy aristocrats and royalties including Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria

Contemporaries: Vincenzo Bellini, Gioachino Rossini, Giuseppe Verdi

Accomplishments:

  • Helped popularize opera semiseria (opera semiseria contains elements of comedy but also of pathos)
